Intention/Will – Korean Aspects #5

In this episode we will learn how to talk about intentions. As there are many expressions about intention, we'll learn about them in 2 weeks.

It is used to talk about your goals, plans or intentions.

I tried to go there in the yesterday morning, but I couldn't because of the big snow.

I just wanted to sleep, but the phone rang.

It is used to talk about your plans or goals. In this case, you have a little mind of not wanting to do that. But you decided to do it, because it doesn't hurt you or it is much more beneficial to you in the long run.

It seems that I should just go there this time.

I should just stop thinking about her. It makes me sad whenever I do it.

It is also used for your plans, goals, or intentions. However, you're less made up your mind than -(으)려고 하다. If -(으)려고 하다 is that you're planning to do it 100%, -(으)ㄹ까 하다 is half and half. You're thinking whether you should do it or not.

I thought about going. But I didn't.

I thought about doing what he told me. But I found the better method in the Internet.

It is used to guess the intention or action of other people.

I wondered whether he would come. But he really did.

I thought she would be sleeping at this time, but she was not.

We learned -겠- and -(으)ㄹ 것이다 a lot in tense series to talk about your will. We'll skip them and learn other expressions.

It is used when you're talking about your plan to other people. -(으)ㄹ게 is 반말 and -(으)ㄹ게요 is 존댓말. Interestingly, many Koreans think -(으)ㄹ께 is correct. But grammatically, -(으)ㄹ게 is correct.

I'll take a sleep only after watching this.

I'll take some rest after checking about this.

It is also used when you're talking about your plan to other people. But it's a bit childish expression. In addition, it has a nuance that you will do it no matter what others say or no matter what happens. It's a bit obstinate.

I'll go home.

You do the rest. I'll end it here.
