-원, 출처, 근원, 소스 – Korean Words vs. Words S2 #8

We get a lot of stuffs from many sources. Thanks to these sources, we don't have to be everything. In this episode, we'll learn how to speak source in Korean.

-원

It is not a suffix in dictionary, but the word source is used like suffix in many words. For example, source of energy is 에너지원. Source of income(소득) is 소득원.

재생 가능한 에너지원은 최대한 많은 곳에 쓰여야 한다.
Renewable sources of energy must be used wherever possible.

Selling ebooks is his main source of income.

출처

When you got your information from something, it is called 출처. In many writings, they show sources and citations. Source is 출처 and citation is 인용 in Korean.

그 정보의 출처가 어디인지 알아보고 있다.
We are trying to find the source of that information.

She didn't reveal the content about the source of materials.

근원

근원 usually means origin. So, it is used a lot to tell the cause of the problem like 소문의 근원(the source of rumor), 폭력의 근원(the source of violence), 만악의 근원(the source of every evil), 만병의 근원(the source or cause of every disease), etc.

그의 말을 통해 문제의 근원에 대한 실마리를 얻었다.
His words gave me a clue as to the source of the problem.

스트레스가 폭력의 근원일까?
Is stress the source of violence?

소스

In engineering context, source code is just 소스. Interestingly, sauce we pour on dishes and source code used to build software are both 소스 in Korean.
