If you want to have more money, there are two ways. The first way is to earn more, and the second one is to use less. If you use something less, then it is called to save something in English and it is called 아끼다 or 절약하다 in Korean.

If you try to say something about using less, then you can use them interchangeably.

전기를 절약하기/아끼기 위해 컴퓨터를 덜 사용하고 있다.
I am using less time on my computer to save the electricity.

공부를 하는 데에는 돈을 절약하지/아끼지 말아야 한다.
We should not save our money for study.

A4용지가 한 장에 6원밖에 안 하더라도 절약해야/아껴야 한다.
Even though a single sheet of A4 is only 6 won, we should save them.

There is a special usage of 아끼다. If it means to love or cherish, then you cannot use 절약하다 here.

그는 아내를 정말 아낀다.
He really loves his wife.

제가 아끼는 제자입니다.
She is one of my cherished student.

조용한 바닷가에 혼자 서 있다 보니 나를 아껴 주시던 분들이 생각난다.
As I am standing on the beach alone, it reminds me of the people who loved me a lot.
