When you feel sad or upset, it feels like something is burning or troubling you inside. Today's expression "속이 상하다" or "속상하다" came from this symptoms.

The basic meaning of 속 means inside so 속 in "속상하다" means your heart or internal organs and 상하다 means "to get some damage," or "being rotten." So, 속이 상하다 means being upset, feeling sad, or something like that.

Examples

너무 속상해 하지 마. 나쁜 일이 있었으니 좋은 일도 생길거야.
Don't be so upset about it. There was something bad and something good will happen.

여자친구가 자꾸 나를 속상하게 한다.
My girlfriend makes me sad a lot.

시험을 못 본 것 때문에 괴로워한다면 내 속만 상한다.
It only makes me upset if I feel troubled with the bad results in the test.
