빼다, 덜다 – Korean Words vs Words #26

Both 빼다 and 덜다 are used for taking something out from the whole part, but there are some differences. We will see them today.
덜다 is used when something cannot be listed like water, rice, etc.
서울로 올라오기 직전 어머니께서는 그릇에서 고추장을 덜어 나누어 주셨다.
Before coming back to Seoul, mother take out some 고추장 from the bowl and gave it to me.
고추장 is like paste. You cannot make list of 고추장 itself, so you cannot use 빼다 here.
아버지께서는 상자에서 배를 몇 개 덜어낸 후 남은 것은 모두 영희에게 보내셨다.
After taking a few pears in the box, father sent everything left to 영희.
Some of you might have guessed that you can list the pears in the box even though the idea is a bit awkward. That's true. In this case, you can use both 덜다 and 빼다.
부담을 덜기 위해서라도 해야 할 일의 양을 줄여야겠다.
I should reduce my work to relieve some burden.
You cannot list intangible things like burden(부담), anxiety(걱정), trouble(수고), you cannot use 빼다. You should only use 덜다 with these words.
If you take out something or someone from the list or something that can be listed, then you should use 빼다 in Korean.
집안 사정이 좋지 않아서 식품 구입 목록에서 과자를 뺐다.
We took out the crackers in the food purchase list because we don't have much money now.
민준이 부모님께서 간곡하게 부탁하셔서 우선 참가자 목록에서 민준이는 뺐다.
We had to count out 민준 from the participants list because his parents pled earnestly.
이 책은 가방에서 빼자. 너무 무겁다.
We should get this book out of the bag. It's too heavy.
