We will learn the differences between 나아가다 and 나가다. Both of them sound really similar. 나아가다 is a little bit longer than 나가다, but they have different meaning. Let's see the difference.
나아가다 means to move toward something. The something here can be a physical object like podium, desk, but also an abstract objects like inter-Korean relationship, Korean language study goal of this month, etc.
이 논문은 우리나라 대북 정책이 나아가야 할 방향을 제시한다.
This thesis tells us where our policy for inter-Korean relationship should go.
한 걸음을 더 나아간 후 오른쪽으로 돌면 나올 거야.
After you walk one step ahead and then turn to the right, you will see it.
그녀는 상을 받기 위해 자리에서 일어나 시상대로 나아갔다.

나가다 has various meanings. When I found that word in the dictionary, there were almost 20 definitions. However, all of those definitions came from this basic meaning, go out from one place. While 나아가다 emphasizes the meaning of direction, 나가다 emphasizes outside.
수업이 끝나자 학생들은 모두 운동장으로 나가 축구를 했다.
After the class, all of the students went out to the playground and played the soccer.
그들은 거리로 나가 대한민국을 외치며 응원하기 시작했다.
They went out to the street and root for the national team while shouting "대한민국."
